// Mission Day 323 - Winter, continued //

The path between the house and barn was a slog of muddy grass and half-melted drifts. Jamie didn’t mind the cold too much anymore but she hated walking through the morass of her front yard. She solved the problem by lining up two parallel lines of 2x4s from her porch to the barn door and then covering those with flat 4x4s to create a walkway. Normally she wouldn’t have bothered; mud on her shoes was far from the worst thing in the world. But today was special.

She lit the woodstove so the room could warm up, looked at the clock, and turned on the radio. The room temperature had already gone up at least ten degrees when the radio static faded. Jamie picked up the microphone as Noa’s voice came over the line.

“Good evening, Indiana. Anyone down there listening?”

“Good evening to you,” Jamie said. They’d long ago discussed the possibility that someone else might happen across the frequency at the right time. It became an even greater concern after their conversations took on a sexual bent. There was nothing either of them could do to prevent eavesdropping, so there was no need to waste time worrying.

“I just finished my dinner,” Noa said. “Lentil soup with cornbread and potatoes au gratin.”

“Damn, you ate better than I did,” Jamie said. “But I’m glad you had a nice meal. It’s a very special day.”

Noa said, “It is?”

Jamie rested her elbows on the table. “Yeah. I wasn’t going to say anything because I didn’t want to make it a big deal, but I woke up this morning thinking that it should be a big deal. Or at least I wanted it to be important.” She took a deep breath. “It’s my birthday.”

Noa sat up straighter. “It is?! Happy birthday, Jamie.” She shoved off from the bulkhead and swam over to her chart. She picked up the marker and wrote the current date. “I can’t believe you weren’t going to say anything.”

“I never make a big deal about my birthday. It’s too close to Christmas. Plus when you tell people, it feels like you’re forcing them to say something back or, you know, buy you a gift. I don’t like putting the obligation on people.”

Noa said, “Well, if you’d told me ahead of time, I definitely would’ve run out to Target and picked something up for you.”

Jamie laughed. “I know, I know. But there is something I wanted to ask of you.”

“Name it.”

“I want to dance with you.”

Noa rested her hand on the wall. “I would love that, Lighthouse, but...”

“I know.” Jamie pulled out a square of wood she’d carved for just this occasion. “But I have a plan.” A few days earlier she’d carved a space out of the piece that was just the right size to fit the microphone with the side button pressed in. She placed it on the table and fitted the microphone into its niche. “Test, test. Can you hear me?”

She pulled the microphone out and released the button.
